Fortification is often needed to ensure adequate nutrient intake for preterm infants. However, human milk naturally contains a high variability in protein, fat and carbohydrates. By using a standard amount of fortification to increase macronutrient levels, the variability in the milk will persist. This leads to a lack of control of nutritional intake, and the risk of over or under nutrition is high.
Target fortification is used to tailor human milk by analysing the milk prior to fortification. By knowing the macronutrient composition of the milk it becomes easy to identify the amount of fortification needed.
Using this approach significantly reduces the variability in nutritional intakes compared to standard fortification and gives each baby the best opportunity for stable growth and development.
Neonatal care has made great strides in the care of preterm babies. Thanks to a better understanding of nutrition, we now know that human milk gives preterm babies the best start in life.
Miris HMA™ measures the energy, fat, carbohydrate and protein content in human milk. This enables clinicians to adapt fortification to the actual macronutrient content of the milk.
Miris partners with Neonatal Intensive Care Units and Milk Banks all over the world. In addition, researchers in both the public and private sector utilises the Miris HMA™ for human milk analysis.
Our product portfolio contains equipment and consumables optimised to provide the most accurate and reproducible results in your human milk analysis.
